THE MYSTICAL POWER OF GEMSTONES IN THE TORAH

From as far back as we can remember men have always been attracted to precious stones and they have always been a symbol of strength and mystery.

In the Torah one finds many commentaries and verses on gemstones.
Animals and plants have special healing properties so do gemstones in the mineral world.
It is written in the Talmud that Abraham was wearing a special stone around his neck. Everyone who was looking at it got healed.(Bava Basra 16b).
It is also written that manna was falling together with precious stones.(Yoma 75 a)
Rabennu Behaye tell us that every stones attracts power from up. When rain falls it receives strength and is blessed from high. (Midrash Berechit Rabba
Ruby
The segulah of ruby does not depend on quality or price of the stone but it needs to be a real natural ruby, not a man made synthetic ruby or an imitation.
The chemical composition of ruby is aluminum oxide (AL2 03) .The chromium traces is giving the stone its red color. Rubies are found in all ranges of red color, from very light pink to a dark red almost black .The best color is a deep red. According to the Burmese people it should be the same color as the first three drops of blood of a pigeon. The best specimen is commonly called Pigeon blood rubies.
Ruby is the second hardest mineral on earth after diamonds. It has a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale. It is on of the most precious and expensive stone together with sapphires, emeralds and diamonds it has a refractive index range of 1.760-1.779 and a specific gravity of 4.0. Its atoms are dispersed in a rhomboedric way.
The most beautiful rubies come from Burma, especially from the famous Mogok mines which produced some of the finest rubies in the world. They are also found in Thailand and in Africa. Recently rubies were also found in Afghanistan with a special deep raspberry color.
So next time you wear a piece of jewelry containing rubies, remember that not only it comes from far away countries and that it offers you the priceless beauty nature but that it also has specific seguloth attached to it.
(For women desiring to become pregnant or to protect themselves against miscarriages I advise that they wear a ruby pendant where the stone is touching directly the skin and that they do it discreetly without telling people around them.)
But what exactly is a gemstone? It is a piece of mineral that is cut or polished and that is used in jewelry. It must be beautiful, especially its color, durable, strong and rare.
In Parasha Tetzave (Exodus 28:17-22) we read about the 12 stones on the Hoshen of the Kohen Hagadol.
For example we read that Odem commonly translated as ruby appertains to Reuben.
In the book Sefer Midrash Talpiot we learn that each tribe was inscribed on the exact stone that had similar characteristics.(segulah)

A woman who wears a ruby around her neck will not suffer from miscarriage. It is also good for women who suffer in childbirth. Women use rubies to become pregnant like the mandrakes of Reuben. It also has the property to stop bleeding to gives light to the eyes, to strengthen the heart and to guard one from anger.(Chilte HaGuiborim).
